At around 8:00 p.m. unidentified gunmen entered a compound in the capital Mogadishu and kidnapped, Sonja Nientiet, a German nurse working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). According to ICRC workers the gunmen appeared to have evaded the compound's security guards and left with the nurse through a back entrance and into a waiting vehicle. A government spokesman said its security services had identified one of the security guards of the compound as being involved in the kidnapping. Following the incident, the ICRC has evacuated the 10 remaining international staffers to Nairobi until further notice. In the past, foreigners, including journalists and aid workers, have been kidnapped by armed gangs or Al-Shabaab militants and held for ransom, sometimes for years at a time.
