At around 21:30 local time, a gunmen opened fire at police officers on the Champs Elysees Boulevard in central Paris, killing one and severely wounded two others. The attacker was shot and killed by other officers. The Islamic State (IS) via their affiliated Amaq news agency claimed responsibility for the attack and named the attacker as Abu Yousif the Belgian. French police later identified the attacker as 39-year-old Karim Souki, who was released from prison last year for trying to kill officers and was under preliminary investigation for terrorism. Following the attack; police closed the famous Blvd as officers searched for a potential accomplice. The attack came just days before the first phase of the presidential elections and two days after police in Marseille arrested two men plotting an attack and sized weapons and explosives from their apartment. The attack is likely to push voters towards the conservative candidates.
