At around 2:30 p.m., a 23-year-old suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan blew himself up in a subway carriage in the Sennaya Ploshchad (square) station in St. Petersburg. At least 14 commuters were killed in the blast and 45 were wounded. Another IED was found at Ploshchad Vosstania metro station and defused by the police bomb disposal technicians. The attack came as President Vladimir Putin visited the city. Following the attack, security services closed all the metro stations in the city. Though Jihadist’s militants, in particular the Caucasus Emirates, have carried out similar attacks in the past, the bombing was the largest to take place outside of the Caucasus region since the December 2013 Volgograd train station bombings. No group has yet to claim responsibility for the attack.
