Melbourne police shot dead a gunman identified as 29-year-old Yacqub Khayre a Somali born Australian citizen, who killed a man and took a woman hostage at an apartment building in the city’s beachside suburb of Brighton. Three police officers were hurt in a standoff with the gunman, which lasted more than an hour. The woman was rescued unharmed. During the standoff the gunmen called a radio station claiming he was acting in the name of the Islamic State (IS) group. The IS via it Amaq affiliated news agency also claimed that Khayre responded to its call for targeting the subjects of the coalition states. Australia, an ally of the United States and its escalating action against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, has been on high alert for attacks by homegrown militants.
